I don't know if it is just me, but the way that Shise acts seems like she has Down Syndrome, or at least she is disabled in some way related to neurological, physical, psychological, and intellectual differences. In Anime, it would be sort of difficult to portray Down Syndrome's distinctive physical features, but she does portray most of the behavioural characteristics of the diagnosis and it does lend credibility to why she is coddled and spoiled by family.

She demonstrates a short attention span, poor judgment, impulsive behavior, low learning, delayed language and speech development as well as behavioral problems such as stubbornness and temper tantrums. She also often has problems with coordination and tasks such as dressing and writing as well as has problems with communication, and expression and is animated quite slowly.

From this perspective, I find her quite endearing as a character, with her actions clearly following her neurology and not an intentional infantilization of herself.

Why do you think of this theory?

No, I don’t think she falls into that category.

She is a normal anime character.

There many like her in anime.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

You couldn't be further from the truth. Shise is one of the, if not the most intelligent characters of this series in the light novels. It might not be obvious cuz they mainly focus on the dumb comedy bits in the anime. She was smarter than most adults around her even when she was in grade school. She's one of the most gifted people in the Houjou family being able to process enormous data in her brain simultaneously. Her ability might even be better than the photographic memory of Saito. Due to her ablities, she's a genius at chess and can take on multiple grand master level opponents at once.

The goofy glutton imouto character she plays in front of Saito is so that he won't notice her feelings for him and end up ruining their current relationship. This way she can always stay by his side as his little sister. While everyone in their family including her mom has other plans and is dead set on getting Shise to marry Saito in the future.

The way her character works is similar to Yuki from the Roshidere series. In the anime, she's portrayed as a hyper otaku brocon but that's completely an act. Her real personality is more mature and the reason she acts like that has something to do with the MC's past.

I am the father of a little girl with autism and I think that has nothing to do with the condition. Shise is just an anime character like many others, she doesn't have Down syndrome or autism, in fact I don't see anything strange about her, it's just the spoiled attitude she adopts when she is with Saito.

@QF_Mike I'm autistic. I have autistic friends with blunted affect like the "kuudere" archetype. I can see people reading her as autistic.
The issue is that Down Syndrome is a lot more specific in terms of traits & symptoms. There's variation there too, of course. However, OP posts like she hasn't any familiarity with either spectrum of traits, which is what makes this thread such a migraine from the outset.

Actually a pretty good theory, only she's not all that chipper. The people I've met with Down Syndrome are always extroverted and constantly happy, Shise is more withdrawn

@AngelofFrost

I think that is how she is portrayed in the manga; in the anime, they have gone for a much different style of character cutting out parts of the plot that don't fit for time management sake. Her ability to play turn based games very well seems to come from practice here in the anime and, though it is clear that she is playing it up and that she is in fact more intelligent than she lets on, I think in the anime they have played it as an attention seeking jealous behaviour rather than as a 'scheme' or a 'plot' since there is no plan beyond being needy completely inline with my discussion previous.

Since I can't speak to the character in the manga my interpretation can only come from the anime so that is why I posed it this way. I think she is great representation from this point of view rather than as a cut and past 'loli' 'bro' con.

@Beechanyo I'm not sure what you're trying to say. You said it's clear that she's more intelligent than she lets on. From that alone, it's quite obvious that she don't have down syndrome as people suffering from that condition tend to have severely low IQ.

Well, at the end of the day this entire discussion thread is kinda pointless. I'm quite positive that medical conditions like "down syndrome" or "autism" were the furthest thing from the author's mind when creating a character like Shise. She's just an anime character playing a typical anime trope. It's not that serious.

I've read all 10 volumes of the LN and the entire novel is filled with cliché tropes making it an extremely frustrating read. I even ended up hating the main couple by the end of the series. I wonder why I even bothered to read such a generic light novel. The same author is involved in making the anime, so it's a fact that even in the anime, Shise is intended to be categorized in the "loli brocon" anime trope as opposed to something like someone suffering from down syndrome. Of course you're free to interpret her character however you like. But from what I see reading some of the replies on this thread, most people here seem to beg to differ.

There was some posts for this anime "Medalist" and I at least somewhat get that because it's such a grounded setting. As you start to make more stylistic settings and wackier characters, the theory that "it was all a dream/coma" or "this character has a disorder" become less and less likely. "I'm Getting Married to a Girl I Hate in My Class" with all the plot conveniences and looney tunes interactions... I do not think Shise has any problems other than loving her cousin.

Everyone who thinks that she could have down syndrom very obviously never had contact to anyone with down syndrom.

People with diwn syndrom suffer from low iq which she obviously does not have.
Also they could never interact on the same Level as people of the same age.

How the fuck is anyone comming to that conclusion?

The term "autism" is thrown arround by clueless people way too much too btw...

Your bio checks out. A good rule of thumb when it comes to characters being something: the story actually makes use of that condition, references it or straight up is about it. You clearly have a loose grip on reality, so stop making shit up about things that you don't understand.

Who cares. Its a quirky anime character, let her exist as she is without trying to diagnose them with a IRL mental disorder.

Also her judgement isn't poor, it was one of her super powers. While Saito had perfect memory, Shise could piece together any set of events and practically has perfect judgement. Would you also attribute Saito as having a mental disorder too because of his quirk? Cmon now.
