5 cm per second is considered to be Makoto Shinkai best work in my book(yes it is better than yourname). It follows a couple relationship grow throughout the ages and how hard it is to move on and its effect on you. It masterfully shows how an event can be intrepeted differently from each perspective and how much words left unsaid can lead a person growth to either the better or its demise.
With art too good for its time you can see the seed of the upcoming blast your name-ish style of art, though a bit rough around the ages it shows how everyday people look making it more relatable. Adding to how amazing the art is, the music choice is perfect. It follow a melody that got upgraded throughout the moments to intrepet its moments, it is so good i actually bought the CD for the music alone, with "distant everyday memory" being my favourite.
The biggest flaw in the movie, it follow an arc time skip sort of style with many parts feels rushed or rather not explained (i.e. the final arc got character unexplained) though still can be easily intrepeted/guessed but it got the perfect ending a movie like this should have. I highly reccomend to watch it and even read the manga/ lightnovel and then read the another story with the girl perspective to get the full picture.
It is one of the best movie anime can offer that i highly reccomend to watch
