THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Wow, this episode really gave me some Harry Potter vibes. I mean, young witches training with broomsticks and magic.

Akko's training was quite amusing imo. She's such a noob so far and barely manages to control her broom. Really liked the overall comedy this episode as I thought was pretty funny. Akko still has a lot to learn so I expect that she develops her skills over time.

Loved how she takes risks to learn though lol. I think she even surprises herself sometimes.

Ako being all over the place again still she lacks control as usual which makes me wonder when she will be able to control her magic.
Still Diana seems to be aware of her potential but she doesn't seem to fear it.

Nah, she said Akko's just guts. But Ursula-sensei thinks there is more to Akko than guts.

For Diana to even recognize Akko is a sign that Diana is well aware of her potential. As a super elite I doubt Diana recognizes any of the other students as peers (and their fawning certainly doesn't help them in her eyes), so for her to single out Akko, even if for guts, shows that Diana has her eyes on her. This is a sign of respect.

And complimenting "guts" is more of a praise in Japan than in the West. If the West overvalues "talent", Japan overvalues "effort". To use a sports metaphor, Diana is the star athlete and she recognizes Akko as the plucky outsider who has just joined the club. She has already decided that Akko is her only potential rival at the school. Of course Diana doesn't yet think that Akko can beat her (or ever will), but compared to the other girls at the school, Diana knows that Akko is the only one who can give her a bit of a challenge (as this race demonstrated).

Oh my goodness, another amazing episode. It's been so long since I actually remembered the air date for a weekly anime series, let alone looked forward to the next episode.

The action scenes were gorgeous and all the expressions were on point. However, I personally felt that the episode was a little bit too rushed. Let's see... They introduced, built up to and showed the entire relay race in the span of a single episode. Not to mention, they even included flying classes and Akko learning to ride a broom. We also have the introduction of Amanda and the gang and the forbidden broom, the Ryuusei-maru. Not forgetting added characterization for Diana, Chariot and additional background information on the Magic Stone and Shiny Rod. Wow, talk about packed!

Personally would have liked to have seen a little bit more of the aftermath of the race and also seen how Amanda got a hold of the broom. Looking at the promotional art, I do believe we haven't seen the last of Ryuusei-maru. (^.^;) I wonder what Akko will have to do to make herself worthy in its eyes.

To be more accurate, she did agree with Diana, but said that someday (she will have more than just guts)...

Also, speaking of Ursula,

I think she already is. The broom will probably come back to her on its own when she needs it.

That's just her way to say that she can see a potential in Akko that Diana still can't see.

It's not like they can't use magic when they're away from the school. They can't use magic when they're away from the Sorcerer Stone which is in the school (in the tower). The stone gathers magic from the leylines. If the witches are close to the stone, they can use magic. But they can also use magic if they're close to the leylines themselves, which explains what happens in episode 1.

I'm really happy with how this episode ended

It wasn't a bad episode but I thought that it would have been a little too convenient that Akko found some legendary super fast broom that she would end up being the first person to tame just cause its her and thus she would end up winning the prestigious race, so her not only failing to tame it but losing the race was quite refreshing imo

I feel like the broom will find its way back to her eventually but she has to earn the right to claim it and frankly she still has a long ways to go before she can actually get good lol

And nice Inferno Cop cameo lol

I wonder if the magic broom will make a return. It seemed like the story was going in a direction about how there could be a hidden meaning behind the broom. For example, the broom was one of Shiny Chariot's cards and/or it was a free-spirited magical item waiting to choose a worthy rider.

It's a little cliche for the main character to get everything, but it's Akko.....she tries soooo hard. She deserves something.

Glad to see some more interactions with Akko and Diana, looking forward to more

And yes, I would use spoiler tags just to be safe, some people here probably haven't put the pieces together yet, so it's better to just be cautious.

EDIT: To all those that are wondering whether the broom will come back, I think a decent indication that the broom will come back is the promo art that MAL is using for this anime. I mean you can see Akko riding it there, though the shackles and stuff are still on it so maybe not. Regardless I'm holding on to the hope that it will come back with those majestic wings

No ones mentioned it, but Sucy could totally play the school bully role. She cheated so bad, yet I couldn't help but grin for every slimy thing she did. I am curious though, what 'plan' does she have that would needs that potion award? I really hope Sucy and Lotte get development soon and thus, Akko develops along with them.

Akko's face was hilarious whrn she tried to tame the broom, just gull of crazy. Also her trying to train her regular broom was so adorable. Plus, Amanda is straight up a more mischievious Ryuko Matoi.

This show is too much fun, I just want the next one already!

Akko really need that "Shooting- Star" broom to win the race. On second thought, maybe not. Since Sucy's already had the plan. Let's just consider her lose at the race as an "exchange" for the thrill or even taming the legendary broom.

Akko is such a fun character to watch. It's like she's on a perpetual caffeine high. I like how everyone around her don't know how to deal with her enthusiasm and goofiness, so they eventually just sigh and give up lol.

As for the wand broom, it probably has already chosen her. I don't think it could find a better owner than Akko.

HOLY FUCK THAT WAS SUCH A GOOD EPISODE!
Seriously, I need to collect myself...just wow. That was amazing, easily the best episode so far. So much awesomeness! Alright let's see:

I really liked the framing of the broom race as a way to re-establish some world-building (The Sorcerer's Stone) as well as expand on some things, and even get a glimpse into Chariot's past. Akko was adorably dorky as always, she really seems like a hot-blooded shounen protagonist in the vein of Luffy or Goku.

The visit to the village was also really cool, it reminded me a lot of that creepy shop Harry visits in The Chamber of Secrets. Even more HP flashbacks lol, when they were looking at the framed picture case I was reminded of Harry being shown the Quiddich trophy case in Book 1. At this point HP comparisons are inevitable, and I grew up on the series so I won't be able to help noting this stuff haha. Still love this tho.

We got some more quality time with Lotte and Sucy which is good as always, and we got a badass if brief re-introduction to Amanda, less so Constanze and Jasminika tho. I'm sure we'll get to see more of them later though.

As a stray thought, I realize that Sucy kind of vaguely reminds me of Konata from Lucky Star. In how she's extremely energized and passionate about one very specific thing, but is pretty much checked out of anything else. She might be a little extreme, but is still a good friend.

Also good lord that training montage, that was beautiful. Another stray thought, I adored the new version of the classic Shiny Chariot OST from the first OVA that played near the start of the episode, that was awesome. Also announcer girl was freaking adorable.

Alright, onto the race...what can I say? It was hilarious, it was intense, it was beautifully animated. Honestly the best part of an already incredible episode. Trigger really outdid themselves, and I'm just in awe of how good this episode was.

I think this episode, despite being enjoyable, was very generic. We basically got our "talentless" MC that, for some reason, is the only person to use an overpowered item like they're the "chosen one" and get benefits from there on.
I can't help to see the resemblance of the eyes from Shining Chariot and Megane-sensei.

Well, to be fair, she literally chained herself to the broom because she couldn't control it, and at the end she still lost the game. So it's not like she could just use it and/or got the benefits without deserving them.

The whole broom race was exciting. Sucy was certainly sneaky with her sabotaging skills to the other competitors with the donuts and the brooms stuck with vines. Giving Akko's broom to hop like a frog was certainly amusing.

But thanks to Amanda's inability to control the legendary broom, Akko was able to briefly tame it a went on a grand tour threw someone's house, underwater and almost crashing into a submarine, knocking out a poor Yeti and travelling alongside a massive A380 jumbo jet.

The dead heat race to the finish between Akko and Diana was awesome, but sadly for Akko, the broom finally broke free from its restraints and threw her off, but not before transforming into a phoenix shape similar from Shiny Chariot's performance back in her past.

So it was predictably Diana's win with her snobbish teammate, but at least she recognises Akko's potential though. =)

Little Witch Academia is my AOTS so far and I hope is gets better and better throughout the 25 episode run. =)

Of course Mrs. Can't do Magic finds Chariot's super powered staff and then manages to use to a certain extent the legendary broom (which was taken somehow by yet another teen girl, Amanda). Everything Akko does leads to Chariot-sama: "I want my picture next to Chariot's". The whole "Diana is perfect", manifested by everyone is quite funny, especially when she didn't do anything out of the world (apart from fucking up and being saved by Akko... nice way to be possibly "the best witch ever"). Diana's friends are some annoying brats. Sucy breaking rules is ignored for some reason. All the magic (or most of them... so far only excepted by the broom) derives from a freaking magic stone. If the Academia was to be taken by Lord Voldemort, what would they do if they can't use magic outside of it? Would they be entirely powerless?

Personally, so far I don't like at all this magic stone thing. I'm hoping for a better world building still. I also hope these characters will develop A LOT and cease being one dimensional. I think the best witch so far is Sucy.

Good to see that the writers were capable of making an episode not revolving around the rod saving the day. Adds a bit of extra uncertainty to what's going on, even if their foreshadowing makes it obvious how some scenes will play out. They just have to cut back on Akko's constant Chariot ramblings. The repetition is driving me nuts.

And it's still high energy and super fun. The idea of introducing the characters from the second OVA through the relay was actually a great idea. Really seamless.

Really love what Trigger are doing with Diana's character, never letting her stray into a 'villanous' role, just making her the teacher's and students' darling without being nasty.

What are you talking about? What do you mean by multiple? Akko only has the one she found in the forest.

If you're talking about the OVA, that's not the first episode of LWA.
The TV series is a reboot, so the forest is now where Akko found the only Shiny Rod

I can't express my love for this anime.
Characters are so lovable, animation is so expressive. Love it!

This episode was super fun.
Akko's yelling at the broom, cleaning, begging. I was laughing so hard!

I don't remember if ever watched an anime this excited. If I ever felt this excited every Monday morning because i could watch the new episode. Never looked forward to a new episode this much.

Can't wait to see Akko's reaction when she realizes who her mentor sensei actually is.

Also, I think that Akko will help Ursula regain her faith trough the show.

And I really hope that the final episodes of the show will have some villain character and that Akko will save the whole dimension! And that she will eventually learn how to use powers, because Shiny Rod and Shooting Star didn't choose her for no reason!
